In order to maximize their potential benefits while mitigating possible risks for users, it is essential that AI systems are trustworthy by design.This blog explores critical transparency components in an AI system, from technical tools and innovations for explainability and fairness assessment to legal implications.By defining transparency principles and discussing various aspects for implementation, we strive to inform companies developing AI services about measures they can take when designing reliable—and thus trust-worthy—AI systems.
Explainability is the ability to understand the current and predicted behavior of a hybrid AI system. It is important for transparency by allowing users insight into a system's inner workings so they can trust it.Techniques such as interpretable models are used to aid in explainability while rule-based systems enable additional layers of understanding externally. However, challenges like solving complex problems or covering all aspects of user understanding arise during explainability efforts which present certain limitations for AI designers and developers.
